AGE: 17
ETHNICITY: The Andals
HOMETOWN: The Twins
CURRENT RESIDENCE: The Twins
OCCUPATION: bitter lordling
SKILLS:
--Reading/writing/maths/economics: Danil is quite clever and took to his lessons the way most boys take to the practice yard. And unlike many lords, he can see the importance of trade and economics to wield power
--Archery: He’s no Hunterly, but Danil is a competent archer. It’s the one physical marital skill he has, which he chose to hone since it didn’t involve getting punched in the face.
--Ambition/self-awareness: these two skills come as a pair, because one without the other would be either ineffectual or useless. Danil wants more, but he realizes that anything he wants he will have to take, that it won’t be given to him. And he is very much willing to take those steps.
HISTORY: Danil is the fourth son of the prolific lord Frey. His birth was uneventful, as was the most of his early life. He was just another child, lost in the mass of the Frey children, and mostly ignored by his father. There was of course the ever-shifting ‘politics’ of the large family, temporary alliances between siblings, vengeance meted out. But of all those temporary alliances, there was only one true alliance for Danil, and that was with his sister Alla. He felt separate from the rest of his family, a strange outsider, except for her, who he loved more than life itself.
Which was why, when Alla was taken during Tani Lynderly’s revolt in the Riverlands that Danil immediately went to his father, weeping, begging for him to pay the insurgents whatever they wanted to give them whatever they wanted, that no price was too high. His father had merely laughed, telling him that a fourth daughter wasn’t even worth a pittance, and if he wanted more he could make more.
He hadn’t even been drunk.
Eventually, they had brought Alla back, in the middle of the night to be left bleeding on the steps of the Twins. They let her keep her life, but they had cut her face. A message, perhaps. Danil spent the entire time with her when she was abed, trying to distract her from her pain, reading to her, sometimes just holding her hand whilst she was senseless with milk of the poppy.
Danil, who before disliked his family, now hated them, and any shred of loyalty he felt to them, was gone.
PERSONALITY: Danil is a man of oversized wants, desires. Not of the flesh, but of station, of respect. Danil has spent his entire life lost in a massive family, a massive family is the constant recipient of mockery and derision of the rest of the lords of the Riverlands. Though Danil can see why, he also sees the potential the Freys have, squatting on one of the largest castles in the Riverlands, dominating one of the more important chokepoints of the continent. He sees what they should be, and he sees what they are, and he wants to be the man to make the change, to make the house realize that potential.
But this raw ambition comes in a prickly package. Danil Frey is frankly, off-putting. It’s hard to say if this is from the way his family treated him, or vice versa, but it still stands that Danil is cold, abrasive, and often, frankly rude. But it’s something that he knows, that he understands. His eyes are clear when it comes to the the ebb and flow of influence in the Riverlands, and likewise, he can see his own faults. He knows that he cannot gather followers through charm or charisma so he won’t. He’ll get them by being smarter, more ruthless, and more effective, than any other man who stands before him.
